Described by Sir Neil Cossons, the former Chairman of English Heritage, as "One of the two most atmospheric mine tours in Europe, the other being the Wieliczka Salt Mine in Poland" the guided mine tour takes the visitor through the only complete underground Cornish tin mine open to the pubic. Worked from the Medieval period until 1780 the mine workings at Poldark retain much of their original character.

The mine workings at Poldark retain much of the atmosphere and give a clear insight into the conditions in which Cornish miners toiled until the 19th century.

Visitors are led by a Mine Guide through workings on Wheal Roots Lode, along Jewson's Crosscut into the Middle Lode and from there descend through the Great Stope on Main Lode down to the Lower Pump where a long level brings the visitor back close to the surface in the Holman Chamber, a Registered place for Civil Ceremonies.

The guided Mine Tour takes approximately one hour. There are between one and five tours an hour, dependant on how busy the site is. For the mine's early history and its geology go to Wendron Mining District. Containing important geology the Mine is a Regionally Important Geological Site.

Miners and fishermen are amongst the most superstitious people.
