Welcome to Poldark Mine, So Much More Than Just A Tin Mine...

Poldark offers a unique learning experience supported by a range of artefacts, a tin mine described by the former Chairman of English Heritage as "the most atmospheric mine tour in the UK", and our experienced staff including a leading mining historian.

We will tailor your visit to meet your educational programme and can help prepare your students for their visit through outreach whilst also offering tailored illustrated talk when they are at Poldark.

Poldark Mine is a genuine 18th century tin mine. Archaeological evidence shows that mining commenced here in the early Medieval period.

The guided mine tour takes groups through three distinct tin loads connected by levels known as Crosscuts. The levels remain much as they were, with occasional low roof lines and water flowing, giving a unique insight into the working conditions of miners and their apprentices, who were as young as 9 years old, in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The Museum gives an overview of tin mining in Cornwall and the unique social structure of those employed in the industry. Students are often surprised at the military association of the tin miners.

By the early 1800's Cornwall was the most technologically advanced mining district in the world. Cornish miners and engineers took their skills and new technology across the mining world. The exhibition gives an overview of where they went and of the rich Cornish heritage which remains from Mexico to Australia, India to Canada. Today the only International Pasty Festival is held in Mexico and the largest Cornish gathering takes place in Australia.

As part of organised school visits Poldark offers PowerPoint illustrated 20 minute talks on a variety of Cornish heritage subjects including: children in the mining industry; Cornish mining history; the development of steam power in Cornwall; Cornish miners and their heritage across the world; the Mexican connection.

Talks can be tailored to individual school requirements.

Situated behind the Main Office and Exhibition Building is a small play area, supervision of children is required at all times.

A covered picnic area is situated next to the Café, alternatively grassed areas can be used. In inclement weather two buildings are used for school groups to enjoy their lunches.
